Shortly after 1:30pm on Tuesday afternoon, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to a reported structure fire at 105 Freedman Ave. in Nanuet.

Arriving on scene minutes later, Chief Chris Koester (8-1) confirmed the fire with smoke coming from several second floor windows. The homeowners, who were already safely out of the house, had left a running hair dryer unattended in an upstairs bedroom, igniting the blaze.

Crews from first arriving 8-EQ, led by Engineer Brian O'Toole (8-8) and Asst Chief Todd Giraudin (8-2) used a single hose-line to make quick work of the fire, which was contained to one bedroom of the 2-story, high ranch style home.

A fire hydrant in front of a neighboring house allowed the first responding pumper (8-EQ) to establish a secure water source for the operation.

Neighboring West Nyack FD (Dept 24) was dispatched to provide a F.A.S.T. team. FAST teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack.

Pearl River FD (Dept 12) and Spring Valley FD (Dept 17) were also called in to provide additional assistance.

“The first crew did an excellent job and knocked the fire down,” Chief Koester, a 16 year Nanuet FD veteran said.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished in roughly 15 minutes.
