SATURDAY MORNING BACK TO BACK CAR CRASHES FOR NANUET VOLUNTEERS

By Jason S.
January 30, 2010

At 11:04am Saturday morning, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to the upper level of the Nanuet Mall for a vehicle extrication. While en-route to the scene, 44-Control advised Chief Mike Mattera (8-1) that Clarkstown Police was reporting a vehicle overturned on its roof with one person entrapped.

Upon arriving on scene, members from 8-EQ led by Lieutenant Billy Schoenleber (8-5) made quick work of freeing the trapped party through the vehicle's door. All units returned to normal service shortly there after.

That extrication, however, would not be the last of the morning.

Less than an hour later at 11:51am, neighboring Pearl River FD (Dept 12) was dispatched to an extrication call in front of 267 Sickletown Rd. A black Porche traveling on Sickletown Rd. lost control and collided with a telephone pole, trapping the driver and passenger. Because of the precarious location of the vehicle, Pearl River FD requested additional assistance from Nanuet FD in the form of a standard mutual aid response. Asst Chief AJ Knapp (8-2) and 8-1750 with a full crew responded over the border into the Pearl River Fire District.

Nanuet volunteers, led by Captain Todd Giraudin (8-4) and Ex-Chief Matt Bowler, assisted Pearl River volunteers in removing the roof and protective roll cage of the highly specialized race coupe in order to grant Paramedics and Pearl River Ambulance EMTs access to the driver.

The West Nyack FD (Dept 24) secured a landing zone for a medivac helicopter less than a mile from the scene for the driver to be transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.
