At 9:25am on New Years Eve, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond with one pumper mutual aid to neighboring South Spring Valley FD for a reported vehicle rolled on its side with one party trapped at the intersection of Scotland Hill Rd and South Pascack Rd.
Upon signing in service, Chief Mike Mattera (8-1) notified South Spring Valley FD Asst Chief Vinny Martuscelli (25-2) that 8-EQ, Nanuet's heavy rescue & pumper, would respond to the scene. When Asst Chief Martuscelli arrived on scene, he confirmed that one vehicle was indeed rolled over on its side and one party was trapped inside the wreck.
Because of the snowy and icy conditions, Asst Chief Martuscelli also requested the Spring Valley and Clarkstown Police departments to dispatch patrol cars to stop traffic on both ends of the road to prevent any further accidents and minimize the risk of any injury to rescuers.
Members from both departments quickly stabilized the vehicle to prevent it from shifting during the rescue work. The windshield and a portion of the roof were removed from the car and the victim was extricated shortly thereafter.
To provide additional manpower to the operation 8-1500 also responded to the scene.
All units returned to normal service a little more than an hour later at 10:48am.
Units:
8-1, 8-3, 8-EQ, 8-1500
