At 8:12am Tuesday morning, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to an automatic alarm sounding at the Wonder Nail Salon on Rt. 59. As Asst Chief Chris Koester (8-3) was responding, 44-Control notified him that Clarkstown Police was on the scene reporting a smoke condition in the rear of the building.
Arriving on scene shortly thereafter, Asst Chief Koester confirmed a working structure fire at the location and requested an additional pumper from West Nyack FD (Dept 24) and a F.A.S.T (Firefighter Assist and Safety Team) team from Pearl River FD (Dept 12). FAST teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack.
Firefighters Mike Kubasek and Jesse Knapp stretched the first hand-line from 8-EQ and were met with heavy smoke and near zero visibility as they pushed through to the rear of the building where the fire had already gotten a good hold of the kitchen and spa area.
Firefighters from West Nyack and Spring Valley FDs assisted in stretching a second hand-line into operation as crews from 8-1500, led by Lieutenant Schoenleber (8-5) and Captain Todd Giraudin (8-4) checked for extension in other parts of the business.
The fire was contained to only one part of the building due to the quick thinking and work of the first officials on scene, including members of the Clarkstown Fire Inspectors office, who were about to start the day's routine inspections when the blaze was reported.
The Monsey FD (Dept 7) was called to standby at 8-100 to respond in the event of any other emergencies in the Nanuet area.
All units returned to normal service shortly after 10:00am.
