| At 7:03am Thursday morning, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to a routine automatic alarm at the Venture Inn at 136 N Middletown Rd. Venture Inns, located throughout Rockland County, are group homes owned by Camp Venture Inc., a not-for-profit provider of family-like care and services to children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Upon arriving on scene, Asst Chief Chris Koester discovered that the automatic alarm, usually determined to be a malfunction, had been caused by a small fire in the attic. Crews from 8-EQ, used a water-can to extinguish the small blaze. "Water-can" is a firefighter slang term for a fire extinguisher filled with pressurized water. Water-cans are frequently used in situations that don't warrant the deluge of water produced from a full sized fire hose.
No injuries to the Inn's residents were reported, and the damage to the building was minimal thanks to the quick work of the Nanuet volunteers. Had there been no automatic alarm installed, or had the alarm not functioned properly, the fire could have spread undetected with devastating results.
All units returned to normal service shortly thereafter. |
