At 5:50pm on Tuesday evening, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to the eastbound lanes of Rt. 59, in the vicinity of the Nanuet Diner, for fluids in the roadway as a result of an MVA.

Already on the road for a routine automatic alarm, units diverted to the busy highway. Upon arriving on scene, crews from 8-EQ, lead by Captain Brian Ready (8-4) found a 2200 gallon tanker truck overturned, blocking lanes on both sides of the median.

The driver, having sustained only minor injuries, was able to communicate to the first responders that the truck was full of type #2 home heating oil. A quick inspection showed that the tank had not ruptured, and that the fluids were leaking from the motor of the truck, not the tank.

Taking precautionary measures, members "boom & dyked" 4 lanes of the roadway to contain any leakage, or rupture of the tank, during the up-righting process. Local towing and salvage experts Stiloski Automotive used their 85-ton crane to up-right the truck with no incident. Castlton Environmental, a Nanuet based environmental clean-up company, and also incidentally the owner of the truck, make quick and easy work of cleaning up the approximately 10 gallons of fluids that did spill onto the roadway.

All units returned to normal service shortly thereafter. The initial automatic alarm dispatched minutes before also required no further attention.
