At 12:50pm on Thursday afternoon, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to the intersection of Rt 59 & College Ave for a reported vehicle leaking fuel.

Upon arriving on scene, crews from first arriving 8-EQ, led by Lieutenant Joe Pacella (8-7) upgraded the incident from a simple vehicle leaking fuel to a 3,000 gallon diesel fuel tanker that had overturned and was leaking its payload.

In an effort to contain the large amount of fuel already spilled, and stop further fuel from escaping from the damaged tanker, the Rockland County HAZMAT team was immediately dispatched.

Additional crews from neighboring Pearl River FD (Dept 12), West Nyack FD (Dept 24), Orangeburg FD (Dept 11), Nyack FD (Dept 10), New City FD (Dept 9), Suffern FD (Dept 19), Congers FD (Dept 3), Spring Valley FD (Dept 17), Haverstraw FD (Dept 4) and Tappan FD (Dept 21) were also called to respond.

As of 4:30pm, efforts were still being made to off-load the remaining diesel fuel from the over turned tanker.
