Shortly before 7:00am Wednesday morning, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond to 5 Fredrick St for a possible furnace fire. Arriving on scene moments later, Chief Chris Koester advised 44-Control of a working house fire, and requested mutual aid from Pearl River FD (Dept 12) for 12-Tower. (Nanuet's 8-Tower was out of service for routine maintenance).
Met with heavy fire conditions upon entry, crews from 8-1500 and 8-EQ, led by Captain Brian Ready (8-4) and Engineer Brian O'Toole (8-8), advanced an 1 3/4" handline through the front door, while crews from 12-Tower assisted by opening the ceilings of the single story ranch style home up to expose the fire above.
A fire hydrant in front of a neighboring house allowed the first responding pumper (8-EQ) to establish a secure water source for the operation.
With continuous fire conditions throughout the attic of the house, Spring Valley FD (Dept 17) was called to the scene to assist with exposing and extinguishing the fire.
West Nyack FD (Dept 24) was initially dispatched as a F.A.S.T (Firefighter Assist and Safety Team) team, but were quickly utilized to assist with fire suppression upon their arrival. New City FD (Dept 9) was called to replace West Nyack as the FAST team.
FAST teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack.
The fire was brought under control roughly an hour later.
Clarkstown Fire Inspectors were called to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
